Rajasthan Government

The integration of 19 princely states and 3 chiefships led to the formation of the state of Rajasthan in India. At present, the second largest state of the country is divided into 32 districts. Jaipur is the administrative capital of the state.

Rajasthan has bi-cameral form of Legislature and has twenty-five Parliamentary Constituencies and two hundred Assembly Constituencies. The predominant political parties in the state are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress.

Currently the state is under the authority of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Rajasthan Government is headed by Smt. Vasundhara Raje. She became the head of the BJP State unit on 6th December, 2003 after winning by majority votes and on 8th December, 2003 she became the first woman Prime Minister of the state.

The Governor of Rajasthan is Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil while Chief Secretary of the state is Anil Vaish.

Rajasthan has six Boards and four Commissions and among them the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) which was established by the promulgation of an ordinance on 16th August, 1949, plays a significant role. Generally the Hon'ble Chief Minister of the State of Rajasthan holds a position in the Commission.

The Judiciary capital of the state is Jodhpur, where the head quarters of Rajasthan High Court is located. A bench of High court is located at Jaipur. Rajasthan High Court exercises original jurisdiction in the state and came into existence on June 21, 1949 under the Rajasthan High Court Ordinance, 1949. Honorable Mr. Justice S.N. Jha is the Chief Justice of the High Court. The Subordinate Judicial Service or the District Courts and Lok Adalats form the lower part of judiciary in Rajasthan.

Rajasthan Police is the agency that enforces law for the state and currently has strength of 70000. The police administration encompasses 39 police districts, 711 police stations, 172 circles and 788 out-posts. There are also12 women Police Stations in the state.

The thirty-two districts of Rajasthan is subdivided into 241 tehsils and other administrative regions that fall under the governance of the Local Self Government of Rajasthan.Rajasthan has a well-defined three tier system of Panchayats in the rural areas and Municipalities in the urban areas. There are about 237 Panchayat Samities, 9,184 village panchayats and 183 municipalities.
