History- This imposing fortress was raised in1593 A.D by Raja Rai Singh, the illustrious general of the Mughal Emperor Akbar's Army. Raja Rai Singh was also the sixth ruler of the city of Bikaner who ruled from 1571 to 1612 AD. Only, Kamaran who was able to capture the fort couldn't even retain his triumph for more than 24 hours.
Description- The fort is surrounded by deep moats and an elevated wall. The fort is guarded by 37 citadels and has two gates- the Suraj Pol(sun gate) and the Karan Pol for providing access in its interior. The fort houses about 37 marvelous palaces made of red sandstone and marble including the Ganga Niwas, Anup Mahal and Rang Mahal (the palace of pleasure). These palaces have elegantly carved windows, beautiful balconies, impressive towers that add a picturesque quality to them. The Phool Mahal is embellished with mirrors and glasses. Anup Mahal, the multi-storied mansion was the ruling chamber for the royalties and the well-maintained rooms now exhibit the hoarded wealth of the Royal family. The Moon Palace looks stunning with the carved marble panels, mirrors and paintings. The Kanar Mahal was erected exclusively to celebrate the victory over the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.
The Har Mandir is the shrine where the members of the imperial family worshipped their gods and goddesses. At present the Fort houses a museum which encloses historic Rajput weaponry, jade handle daggers made of jade, inlaid handguns and camel guns, ancient manuscripts, gems and jewelry, plush carpets, priceless miniature paintings and so on.
