Mount Abu Sanctuary

Mount Abu, nestled in the laps of the oldest fold mountains Aravali ranges, is the only hill station of Rajasthan. Being a great site of Eco-Tourism, Mt. Abu houses the Sanctuary that is the natural habitat of a large number of plants, animals and birds species.

The sanctuary that an area of about 288 kms is covered by subtropical evergreen forests and the atmosphere of this place is dominated by the fragrance of jasmine flowers especially during the months of March and April. This place which used to be the former summer resort of the Rajput princes was declared as a sanctuary in 1960.

Location - Mount Abu is located in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan and lies about 185 kms from Udaipur.

  • Road- Comfortable deluxe buses are available from Jaipur and Abu Road to Mount Abu. The place is also well connected to Delhi, Udaipur, Ajmer, Bundi and Udaipur by road.

    Flora- The sanctuary consists of 112 varieties of floral plants and boasts of the finest assortments of orchids. The floral plants include roses, champa and jasmine. The sanctuary also abounds in Kacchar, Kaionda, Mango, Khajur and Phaludra and other herbs and plants with medicinal values. The sanctuary has xenomorphic subtropical thorn forest at the foot hills and subtropical evergreen forest near water sources and high altitudes.

    Fauna- The inhabitants of this Mount Abu Sanctuary are- Langoor, Indian Civet, Hyena, Wild Boar, Sambhar, Chinkara Pangolin, Jungle Cat, Leopard, Hedge hog and Porcupine. There is a majority of Sloth Bears in the place and can be seen even in the hills. Previously this sanctuary was also the haven for tigers and lions but and to name just a few. In the past the sanctuary also was inhabited by lions and tigers, but they have disappeared now.

    Avifauna- The sanctuary is also the abode of more than 250 species of birds and the grey jungle fowl is endemic to this region.
