Early Life
Sangma completed his schooling in 1982 from Government High School at Ampati. He finished his pre- university (Science) in 1964 from St Anthony's College in Shillong. In 1989, he completed his MBBS degree from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. While doing his graduation he was a member of the governing body of RIMS Students Council. He also joined as the medical officer in "Zikzak Public Health Centre".
Political Career
In the year 1993 Sangma entered into active politics. On 1993, February, he was elected as an independent MLA for the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya, from the constituency of Ampatigiri. From the month of February, 1993 until September, 1993, he was the Chairman of the "Meghalaya Transport Corporation"
The various positions held by Sangma in his entire political career may be summarized as below.
- From the month of November, 1996 till the month of February, 1998, he was the Secretary of the Parliament, Government of Meghalaya.
- From August 3rd, 1998 to the September, 1999, he was the cabinet minister with the charge of the departments of Fisheries, Cooperation, and Taxation etc. under the Meghalaya Government.
- From December 8th, 2001 to March 4, 2003, he was the cabinet minister with the charge of the portfolios like IPR, Taxation etc, under the Meghalaya Government.
- From 5th March, 2003 to April 10, 2005, he was the cabinet minister and took care of the departments of PWD, Taxation, Education, Home, Information Technology, Forest and Environment, IPR, Election etc.
- He was the Deputy Chief Minister of the Meghalaya Government from April 11, 2005 to October 6, 2005.
- He was the Deputy Chief Minister under the Meghalaya Government from March 11, 2007 to March 2008. He was the in-charge of the department of IPR, Election, Planning, Power etc.
- He served as the Deputy Chief Minister under the Meghalaya Government from May, 2009 to April 2010. He was the in-charge of the department of IPR, Health, Finance, Power, Horticulture, Home etc.
- He also served various other posts in the Indian National Congress for Meghalaya. From 1998 to 1999, he was the Secretary of the "District Congress Committee" in West Garo Hills. From 1999 to September 2000 he was the President of “District Congress Committee” in West Garo Hills. In November 2000 he became the General Secretary of I/C Frontal Wings, Pradesh Congress Committee, Meghalaya etc.
Dr. Mukul Sangma takes active interest in various social works and is involved with women mobilization for socio-economic development and social awareness within the rural areas. He is also into a variety of programmes on youth development like sports, promotion and preservation of culture. More than 200 youth societies have been formed under his motivation
He has been the patron of Youth Welfare Club, Ampati. Also he is one among the founder members of "Mirachel Foundation", a body involved in many social service activities. Besides these, he is an advocate of people’s empowerment and traditional institutes.
