Meghalaya High Court

Meghalaya High Court does not exist. Rather it falls under the jurisdiction of the Guwahati High Court. The Guwahati High Court in Meghalaya maintains a circuit bench at Shillong to look after the legal procedures of the state in those areas that fall under its direct supervision. The judiciary in the remaining areas are looked after by the district councils, who follow the age old customs of juridical procedures in judging the incumbents.

Shillong Bench, Criminal and Civil Procedures

The Shillong bench of Guwahati High Court in Meghalaya looks after the judiciary of the areas that falls under the direct supervision of the court. The civil cases are supervised by the District Judge. The munseffs and legal practitioners help him with the procedures. The code of the Indian Civil Procedure is followed in the proceeding with the judgment.

The Session Judge is responsible for looking after the criminal cases of the area. Here also the code of criminal procedure is followed.

Deputy Commissioners

In the absence of a Meghalaya High Court, the deputy commissioners of each region serve important judicial functions. They facilitate the workings of the Guwahati High Court at Meghalaya. The names of the various deputy commissioners with their respective areas are presented below.

The office of the District and the Session judge are both held by the same officer at present. He is also the Additional Deputy Commissioner of the state and is responsible for the implementation of the law in the East Khasi Hills region.
