East Garo Hills

East Garo Hills was declared a district in 1976. This district is surrounded on the north by the Assam state, on the south by the South Garo Hills, on the west by the West Garo Hills and on the east by the East Khasi Hills.

The current headquarter-complex is renamed after Captain Williamson as Williamnagar. It has all the features present in a modern town. The total population of East Garo Hills of Meghalaya is 2,50,582 and its population density (per square km.) is 96.3. East Garo Hills in Meghalaya is a hilly region.

A major feature of the characteristic dissected hills of the region is the Arbella Range. It runs through the district's south-central part. The peaks of the range have an average height of 700 meters above sea level. The Simsang Valley in the district's southern part is the other important feature.

The longest river of the Garo Hills, River Simsang, flows through this district before it reaches the South Garo Hills, though its origin is in the West Garo Hills. The remaining part of the district is made up of low, undulating hills, whose height ranges from 150 to 600 meters above sea level. Other than River Simsang, the main rivers of the district are Ildek, Manda, Damring, and Didram. The biggest Garo festival is the Wangala.
