Taxis in Mizoram

Taxis in Mizoram are a very reliable mode of transport in the northeast Indian state. They form a substantial percentage of the transportation facility in the city. In comparison to the buses of the Mizoram State Transport Corporation, they charge a higher fare but they are the fastest mode of public transportation around.

Most of the taxis are affiliated to one union or the other. The unions regulate the fare with respect to the centralized directives all the way from New Delhi. The taxis are mostly well maintained and manned by the local Mizos. Occasionally, the members of the Garo, Khasi or Jaintia tribes migrate to the cities, looking for jobs. They end up as taxi drivers because of their knowledge of the local areas.

Luxury taxis are very few between, the reasons being that their maintenance charges are quite high and their occupancy rates are low due to their high fares. Sometimes, taxis double up as day hires for taking families out on a joy trip or for business executives.
