The Legislative Assembly of Mizoram was established in the year of 1972 on the 10th of May when it attained the status of Union Territory. After the formation of a separate state of Mizoram on the 20th of February in the year of 1987, the State Legislative Assembly began to operate with 40 members who were elected on the basis of adult franchise.
An active participant of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 1987 onwards, the members of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly take part in the several meetings and conferences of the organization. The Legislative Assembly of the state comprises of 20 standing committees that look after the administration of Mizoram.
Headed by the Chief Minister, the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram takes many important decisions regarding the social, political and economic condition of the state. To adopt new policies and implement them, the Legislative Assembly had organized a training session of the Members of the state Assembly in collaboration with BPST.
The Legislative Assembly of Mizoram has a huge library which is a vast store house of books, journals and magazines. For convenience of the readers, the library of the State Assembly has been recently computerized. The Legislative Assembly launched its official website for easy accessibility of official information regarding any Minister or Committee.
Mizoram State Legislative Assembly is known for its discipline and transparency of the work culture. The important meetings of the Assembly is presided over by the honorable Speaker, Mr. Lalchamliana of the house. The Legislative Assembly of Mizoram has played an important role in the progress of the state.
