Legend of the state has it, that the stone was laid by the chieftain Sibuta who was the orphan adopted by the chief of the village. The lust for power drove Sibuta to murder his adoptive father and usurp the power as chief of 2000 houses. His love for a girl was jilted by her enraging him immensely. Infuriated, he placed the young and beautiful girl, Darlai in a pit over which he built a memorial for himself. Sibuta engaged several people in the laborious task of lifting the stone from the banks of the River Tlawng that flows at a distance of 10 kilometers from the village. The stone was stained by the blood of three people of the village who were sacrificed to bathe the stone with their blood. The memorial was erected over the pit which contained the living Darlai inside it.
