A medical college is a tertiary educational institution that teaches medicine. Under the Indian educational system admission to medical colleges is through a highly competitive examination conducted by either the central government or the concerned state board. The number of student applicants far exceeds the number of students selected.
The degree granted is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The undergraduate program consists of nine semesters, followed by one-year internship.
Further Postgraduate qualifications like M.D or M.S can also be pursued. The medical education and its qualifications are under the Medical Council of India (MCI).
