Airtel's Free-Public Wi Fi Hotspots Launched in Gurgaon

Gurgaon has taken the first step to become a completely digital destination. Airtel has recently launched a number of Wi-Fi hotspots to be set up in public areas of Millennium City. Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon is one of the major promoters of the said initiative. Manohar Lal Khattar, chief minister of Haryana, launched the programme on 11 July, 2016. The facilities are expected to be available at areas such as Sarhaul village, Sardar Bazaar, MG Road, and Sector 29 and the Wi-Fi at these locations is supposed to be free of cost. In order to use the facility users need to activate Wi-Fi on their phones and then choose the network named MSG powered by Airtel from the list of available networks.

30-minute quota

As of now, the quota for free internet usage is 30 minutes. This is applicable for each device on a daily basis. Users can also continue using this facility for more than the stipulated period but they will need to pay a certain amount, which is supposed to be nominal in nature. People who use Airtel will be charged the normal rate applicable for their respective data packs and plans. People who don’t use Airtel will need to purchase vouchers online but at rates that are easily affordable. Customers using Airtel can also use the facility by using their Airtel Hangout app.

A five-year contract with Airtel

Dhruv Bhagat, who is the CEO of Delhi/NCR operations of Bharti Airtel, attended the event. He expressed the organization’s happiness at being able to associate with the regional administration of Gurgaon and help people in the city get access to internet services, which are comparable with the very best in the world, while on the move. It was in 2015 that Airtel was successful in procuring the mandate from MSG to launch the said facility and make available free internet to people in the city.

As of now, Airtel has received a five-year contract to provide the facility. It is also expected to expand the locations in the near future. The organization is expected to pay INR 10 lakh to Gurgaon’s Municipal Corporation in order to use its infrastructure as well as space so that it can build the Wi-Fi towers and hotspots.

Right next to Gurgaon is Delhi. Delhi is much more advanced than Gurgaon in every sense of the term, including access to free Wi-Fi facilities. Delhi already has free Wi-Fi at Connaught Place – instituted in 2015 – and it is supposed to be expanded to other locations in the city as well. However, that situation is now resolved to a certain extent by the latest facility in Gurgaon.

Why should people in Gurgaon look forward to this?

Gurgaon may be one of the top names in India as far as infrastructural growth is concerned, but the pace of Wi-Fi expansion has been unsatisfactory to say the least. It is expected that Airtel shall provide decent services over here with good speeds and coverage to boot. Lot of people have also expressed relief that state-run companies such as MTNL and BSNL were not chosen for the purpose.

There are still some major locations in the city that can do with such facility like Cyber City, Ambience Island, Galleria Market, Rajiv Chowk, and Golf Course Road. It is expected that they will be next in line for such development. Rapid Metro, the metro service available in this city, is already equipped with Wi-Fi provided by MTS. It sees at least 1 lakh commuters on a daily basis. As per the state government, the aforementioned places are likely to be equipped with internet pretty soon. However, there is no definite timeline for the same.
