Are you pursuing career irrelevant to your education?

Do you belong to a category in which your present employment and education are different from each other? You wanted to do something else and landed up somewhere else. So another thing after quality, which needs to be changed in the education system of India, is the relevancy of education to a career and goals of one’s life. The Indian education systems lacks this and hence most of the students even after competing their graduation and post graduation stand nowhere, still unsure of what to do.

Though this is not a case with every student as some proportion of apprentices do find jobs in their relevant fields, but still there is a significant number of students in India who pursue career different from their college education. It has been found out in a survey that about 90% of engineering students choose career not related to their stream like electrical engineer finds job in IT industry and so on. Same is the story in different fields of education. Most of the BA/BSc students end up in picking career in the fields of politics, media, as dress or clothing designer etc.

It is well known that education and employment run on the same wheel, but students from a particular field and educational institute get employed as soon as they complete their education and some even before that. But for others, the scenario is totally different and that is why due to frustration they land up in a different career. So if the market will not have enough jobs in their field of education then they will have no other option but to work in irrelevant field. To avoid this, students should be made very clear on the jobs and career prospective in their chosen field.

Secondly, students in India are generally not aware of what they are doing in their college till they spend at least 1-2 years in a professional field. At that point they come to know that their education is not at all relevant to what they want in life. So they switch to another career by doing certifications etc. To avoid this scenario in your life it is better to take career guidance right before selecting a career path. Career guidance plays a major role while selecting the right track and must be taken as a very important aspect of life. It is meant not just for the students but for professionals as well who are looking for growth but lack in required education or skills.

Thirdly there is a mismatch between skills and job openings in the market as job market keeps on fluctuating. There is no connection between what is taught in the classroom and what is required at a job. For this, educational institutes, universities and colleges must have proper collaborations with the companies so that required skills can be imparted to the students. Also in this way they will be clearer of their goals and objectives in life.

Students doing professional courses have an upper edge over the ones who are from general streams. That is why many students go for vocational courses after completing graduation. Students feel that vocational courses give them the required confidence which is not provided by the normal classroom teaching. But the right education does give you an edge over others though students learn more in their intern ship  Therefore irrespective of a degree, intern ships should be made compulsory so as to get a real experience of professional field before jumping into it.

In India, the focus of the education system is more on attaining a degree rather than its practical use. So there should be a diversion and during education, practical knowledge should be imparted and also there should be regular updates in curricula as per the changes in market. For the same reason, along with classroom education, students must be provided with industry experience. Then every student must be prepared in communication skill as this is one of the most important aspects of the professional world. You won’t get job if you do not have communication skills, even if you have earned so many degrees. Students must not pursue any education for the sake of doing it or getting a degree, as this leads to more irrelevancies in life and career. Never run after the crowd, but ascertain what you want in life.

Apart from this, it is the responsibility of a person to choose an educational field wisely so as to be in a profession of their choice. If you are not able to clear entrance tests do not get disappointed as there are many other education streams related to what you want to do. You must pick the right option from the beginning. Make full efforts to be in the stream of your choice for a better professional life.
