Driving, besides being a pleasure, is also a sort of adventurous pursuit, which gives a sense of independence. No longer the need to wait for your dad to drop you at your favourite eatery or travel distressingly in a packed bus/metro or even risk getting overcharged by auto drivers. If you know driving and have a vehicle of your own, you are practically a free bird. To drive legally, you are required to have a driving license, the process of which is actually easy if your driving skills are refined. Below, we break down the whole formal process and drop a few dos and don’ts while you are at it. Here we go…

To get your driving license you need to pass two tests, one written and other practical. The written test can be taken once you turn 18 and for the practical one, you have to wait a month after clearing the written one. After qualifying the written test, you get a learner’s license, which stays valid for 6 months.

Procedure for Getting Permanent Driving License

1.You first need to book an appointment for taking the test. You can either go online, download the CMV 4 application form, book a slot and then go to RTO (Regional Transport Office) at the assigned time. Or, you can directly show up at RTO with relevant documents, including 3 photographs.

2. Either you take online route or directly go to the RTO, you will be required to produce following documents: learner’s license, PUC certificate, duly filled application form, recent passport size photographs, fitness certificate, documents pertaining to the vehicle in which you wish to appear for test, such as, insurance certificate, registration certificate, pollution under Control Certificate and tax card.

3. To take the driving license test, you need to visit RTO and pay the fees for the test. The fees was earlier Rs. 50 but got revised to Rs. 300 in early 2017. At the office, submit all the documents along with the application form.

4.The driving test should be an easy game if you are well versed in driving your respective vehicle. If the performance is deemed satisfactory by the testing authority, the Asst. RTO will confirm the status on issuing of the driving license. Then, you will be transferred to a room and your photo will be captured by a computer. And the next day between the duration of 4.30 PM to 5.30 PM, you can avail your driving license.

In case you fail the test, you will be eligible to take the test again after 7 days. However, you will need to submit the fees again.
