Electronic Dance Music

What is EDM?

EDM or Electronic Dance Music is alive and kicking in India.

So where are you? You don’t just listen to EDM – you feel it. The next gen is embracing it and how. Go visit one of the gigs that have been happening all over India and see how the shift in the ‘in’ thing is moving from the very current hip hop to EDM. The crowds are thirsting for more and the latest to fire the wild crowds has just been to India. Yes, it’s Deadmau5 we’re talking about. Born, Joel Thomas Zimmerman in 1981, this guy from Ontario, Canada is now rocking India.

India seems to be on all major DJs’ must-visit list and the tremendous connect with a growing fan club has ensured big names like DJ Armin Van Buuren, Hardwell, Tiesto, Alesso and Zedd have all performed here. So what makes EDM tick? Several first timers have come out swearing about its magical experience all with its laser, pyrotechnics and the sheer vibrancy of the crowds going wild. And it doesn’t come cheap with tickets ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000. The packed venues tell their story.

If you are from the late 70s and early 80s, you’ll remember the synthesized sounds of Giorgio Moroder and Kraftwerk. While they co-existed with the Disco beats of the time, techno sound moved on with various experiments and has today evolved with a distinct genre and sub genres of its own. It ain’t the lyrics, it’s the pure pulsating sound that can keep you on the dance floor till the morning sun arrives.

Sub genres include acid techno, ambient techno, minimal techno and tech house. Fusion genres include digital hardcore, dub techno, kuduro, electroclash, eurodance, ghettotech and trance. Tracks are created computers using synthesizers, drum machines, sound samplers and digital audio workstations.

The Sunburn fest is now a must visit on Gen-X’s calendar. They have organized packed gigs with the likes of DJ Armin Van Buuren performing in a 6 hour marathon along with Trevor Guthrie, Cindy Alma, Fiora Cutler, Lauren Evans, Richard Bedford and Laura Jansen.
