The Telangana Government uplifted the lives of single women, deserted by their husbands and relatives, by introducing a pension scheme wherein they will be given a pension of ₹1,000 per month on humanitarian grounds. In a first such move in India, the Telangana Government launched the welfare scheme for single women, keeping in mind the betterment of the society. In fact the Telangana government is the first and only government to launch such a scheme in India.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government has been providing pension to 38 lakh persons spending ₹5,600 crore per annum in categories that include senior citizens, widows, disabled persons, and beedi workers. On receiving a petition from single women, abandoned by family, with a plea for help, the Telangana government decided to include them to the list of pensioners. The beneficiaries will get the pension in their bank accounts every month. There is also an appealto bring married women separated from husbands within the ambit of the scheme.
The government has also increased the Kalyana Laxmi and Shaadi Mubarak scheme amount from ₹50,116 to ₹75,116.
Minister for Finance and Civil Supplies Eatala Rajender distributed pension to 324 single women at a programme in Karimnagar town on Sunday, 4 June, 2017 wherein he also announced that children of single women would be admitted into all Telangana Residential Educational Institutions without having to write an examination or waiting for the lottery system. Mr. Rajender reiterated that this was a continuous process and urged all single women of the state to apply for the scheme.
Pension Scheme for Single Women Across Telangana
- Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao gave pension papers to 836 women in Siddipet.
- MLA Chinta Prabhakar and Collector Manickraj Kannan launched the scheme at Sangareddy.
- At Medak, the scheme was launched by Deputy Speaker M. Padma Deveder Reddy and Collector Bharati Hollikeri.
- Forest Minister Jogu Ramanna on Sunday launched the pension for single-women scheme at the Revenue garden function hall in Adilabad
- Housing Minister A. Indrakaran Reddy launched the scheme at Nirmal.
- In Nizamabad distribution of pension to single-women at Banswada in Kamareddy district was launched by Agriculture Minister P. Srinivas Reddy.
This scheme introduced by the Telangana Government proves that the welfare of women is of utmost priority for the government. The government already has schemes for the aged and the widowed and has been spending around Rs 5000 crore towards the betterment of the women of the society.
The pension will go a long way in helping single women, especially those who have been facing difficulties, and is certain to improve their quality of life not only financially but also socially. For being recognised by the government will help give relief to the single women who are otherwise generally ostracised in a society. The pension will go a long way in boosting the morale of single women.
The single women beneficiaries of the scheme are praising the State government for recognising them and honouring them with pension. They urged the government to accord priority in providing employment to single women.
