Lamhe is considered to be one of Yash Chopra’s finest works. It depicts the story of Viren, who along with his dai jaan visits his ancestral home in Rajasthan. Over there, he meets a beautiful girl, Pallavi and falls in love with her. However, he is heartbroken to discover that she is already in love with another man. Over the demise of Pallavi’s father, Viren takes the responsibility of getting her married and then returns to London. Unaware of his love for her, Pallavi continues to write him friendly letters. Unfortunately, her husband gets killed in an accident and Pallavi too, passes away after giving birth to a baby girl. Years later, her daughter Pooja, a spitting image of her mother, develops feelings for Viren, who is around 18 years her senior and who still has repressed feelings for Pallavi. The story becomes even more complex when Anita, Viren’s girlfriend comes into the picture.
Anil Kapoor has played the male lead of Virendra Pratap Singh, who has been brought up in London and comes from a wealthy family. Waheeda Rehman is his dai jaan in the film and carries out the role perfectly. Her small dance sequence on “aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai”, which is a song from her own movie Guide, shows that her timeless grace outshines her years! Sridevi plays the double role of Pallavi and Pooja. Her performance is bound to impress the viewer, given her lithe dance movements, bewitching looks and fine acting skills. Anupam Kher also does well in his role of the happy-go-lucky Prem, Viren’s best friend, who is beside him, through thick and thin.
The movie has been shot in Rajasthan and London, capturing some essence of both cultures. A couple of songs in the film are quite popular such as “morni baaga ma bole” and “meri bindiya”. The parody song is a good attempt to recapture some aspects of the films of yesteryear.
Although, Lamhe wasn’t much of a success initially, it later went on to become a classic Bollywood film and has won many accolades!
