I used to work in Make MyTrip before I left my job last year in October. One of my collleague in my team was from Alleppey and when I saw the pictures of this place in his phone, I was so excited to at least go and visit Alleppey but never thought it would be so early.
Alleppey is roughly midway between Kollam which is approx 83 kms to its south and Kochi which is 65 kms to its North. It was once known as the wealthiest ports along the Malabar Coast, shipping spices, cashews, tea, coffee, etc from the backwaters. Alappuzha prospered to such an extent that successful British traders did not want to leave at Independence. With its trading history & interconnecting canals, tourist literature refers Alappuzha as “Venice of the East”. The best way to get around in the city is to hire a bicycle from front of DTPC tourist office.
It is totally uninspiring to stay in the centre of the city. Try and experience a Houseboat and houseboat cruises are making big bucks these days. The most popular tourist cruise excursion in the region is Kollam to Alappuzha.
Do try backwaters homestays or houseboats.
