Location: Jaipur, Rajasthan

The best way to delve into the absolute beauty of the city of Jaipur is to stand at a hill-top fort and have a panoramic view of the city.  And Jaigarh Fort is by far the best place to try this. Perched on a promontory called “Cheel ka Teela”, Jaigarh fort was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.  It was precisely built as a military structure in order to protect the Jaipur city and more so the Amber Fort. As the highest structure of the city, the Jaigarh fort overlooks the Amber Fort and the Maota Lake near Amber.

Built in the year 1726, Jaigarh Fort is also known as the “Victory Fort of Rajasthan”. Even after hundreds of years, it is one of the forts which has withstood the ravages of time and remains almost intact in its architecture. The fort houses several residential palaces, temples, water reservoirs, gardens, a granary, an armory, a tall tower and cannons in its vicinity. The Jaigarh Fort stands at a height of 4oo feet, running across for 3 km and is 1 km in width. The walls have been constructed with thick red sandstone.

The Jaigarh Fort is the strongest and most imposing fort out of the three in Jaipur. The world’s biggest cannon on wheels, the Jaivana Cannon, which was manufactured within the fort, is still stationed inside it. A huge treasure of Maharaja Jai Singh was believed to be buried under the fort, which was reportedly seized by the Government of Rajasthan after its discovery. Even though the fort is plain and simple in its architecture, it is no less than a palatial structure in its appearance.

The Jaigarh Fort speaks volumes of the glorious past of the city of Jaipur. For the history buffs, this place is the best specimen of history that gives a detailed account of the rulers of Jaipur. The astounding grandeur of this fort is something that should not be missed while visiting the pink city!
