Kollam or Quilon, as it was known to the Portuguese, has its mention in the Greek literature as well. It is an international center of trade even now and is a prosperous commercial center. Situated about 73 Kms North of Trivandrum, one does not have to think too much for getting into the city as it is well connected by rail, road and backwater transport. One can go to Alleppey from Kollam in a ferry that takes approx 6 hours. Carrying water for drinking is must or you will have a really hard time on the ferry. I felt people in Kollam take their Sundays very seriously as I did not see many people on road and 80-90% of the shops were closed. I had a difficult time looking for an internet cafe and could not find one.

144 feet high, Thangassery light house is a centre of attraction here. Kollam has one of the oldest ports in Arabian Sea that saw traders from various parts of the world like Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese eager to get their hands on spices and cashew crops. Market in Kollam is full of cashew and cashew related products. The centre of town usually remains hectic on weekdays but backwaters are reasonably calm and you can easily plan your getaway to Ashtamudi Lake, a very peaceful area. Kollam has some of the beautiful beaches and you can plan your evening to the beautiful Mahatma Gandhi Park ( entry fee Rs.5) facing the sea which is just 02 kms from the city centre and is crowded in the evening but must visit.
