The program to set up a school in the region was first initiated by Major General Sir Henry Lawrence who thought is necessary to establish a school in 1858 for the wards of the retired British army officers and the ones who have dedicated their lives to the defense service of the country. The school is named after the founder. The management of the school was overtaken by the Ministry of Education of the Indian government in the year 1949. Since then, Lawrence School in Lovedale has operated as a public school allowing admission to all the students with special provisions or 40 percent seats reserved for the wards of the defense and army personnels.
Lawrence School Lovedale is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education that conducts examination and awards certificates to the meritorious students who qualify in the secondary and the higher secondary examinations.
