Languages in Ooty



People from various backgrounds have come to stay in Ooty , over these years. Thus the people of Ooty speak in many different languages. The most popular spoken languages in Ooty are Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and English. Telugu language is also used by some of the people living in the hill station of Ooty.

There are also many tribal communities residing in this hill station of South India. These communities are among the early inhabitants of the region. The people belonging to the Toda community speak in their own language. It is known as the Toda language. The language of the Toda people is of the Dravidian origin. It is an oral language and does not have a script.

The most popularly used language of Ooty is Tamil. It is used by a large section of the population.

Tamil Language

The Tamil language is among the oldest of the Indian languages. This is the language from which all the other Dravidian languages originate. It is one of the official languages of many South Indian states, beside Tamil Nadu.

The alphabets of the Tamil language are unique. The script of this South Indian language is phonetic and not pictorial. It is a diverse language and survives in two different forms. Thus, spoken Tamil and written Tamil are not similar.

Tamil, being an ancient language, is the richest of all the languages of the Dravidian origin. Most of the courtly literatures of South India were composed in this language.

In the present days English is also among the most commonly used languages in Ooty.
