Berhampur University was founded in the year 1967, on the 2nd of January. The first vice-chancellor of the university was Dr. A.N. Khosla. Berhampur university is located in Bhanja Bihar, which was named after the poet Kabisamrat Upendra Bhanja. The university campus covers a total area of 250 acres. The university located in the suburban areas is almost 12 kilometers away from the city of Behrampur. The campus has in totality 8 hostels, 8 teaching blockades, an M.E. school, junior college, a canteen, a health care center, sports area, a guest house, a museum hall, playground, a shopping compound, post office, administrative building and a centralized bank.
The university of Behrampur governs the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nowrangapur, Phulbani and Boudh. 62 non-governmental colleges, 11 government run colleges, 26 technical colleges are under this university. The students studying in this university are given a varied choice of subjects. The subjects are namely Fine arts, library science, commerce, law, education, nursing, ayurveda, homeopathy, pharmacology, military science. There are around 20 post-graduate sections that provides specialized studies to the students. Some of the subjects, which are in great demand in the university are Marine science, tourism and Indian monuments, mass communication, electronic science, computer science.
The various projects conducted are mostly funded by I.C.S.S.R., U.G.C., C.S.I.R., D.S.T.E. Almost 250 research based texts are published by the respected teachers of this university. It has been said that the university has carried out more than 25 seminars and conferences annually. Many summer programs, refresher courses and orientation classes are provided in order to benefit the students.
