The Balukhand Sanctuary or the Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the eminent sanctuaries that dots the landscape of the state of Orissa. The sanctuary also illustrates the diverse natural heritage that the picturesque state is blessed with. The beauty and splendor of the panoramic vistas is further accentuated by the variegated species of fauna and the lush flora. Consequently, the Orissa Wildlife Tours are a rage with the tourists.
A well known Orissa Wildlife Sanctuary, the Balukhand Sanctuary hugs the coastline in between Puri and Konark. Sited in Orissa's Puri district, the moderately sized sanctuary encompasses an area of 72 sq. km and is an oasis of idyllic green. The verdant green and serene ambiance is a welcome refuge for the city slicker tourists. Sylvan lakes that sparkle like a mirage of quicksilver are interspersed across the sanctuary.
Balukhand Sanctuary's pride rests in the numerous species of wildlife that are sheltered in the sanctuary. Black bucks, monkeys, mongoose, squirrels, spotted deer, hyena, jungle cats and jackals inhabit the secluded enclaves of the wildlife reserve. Ornithologists and bird lovers have a merry time watching the birds dappled in vibrantly colored plumes go about their daily routine with clockwork precision. Entomologists and reptile specialists also frequent the sanctuary. The sanctuary had been formed with the objective to provide shelter to the endangered and endemic species like the olive ridley and green sea turtle.
Another big draw happens to be the Nunani estuary that is located on the northern fringes of the Balukhand Konark Wildlife Sanctuary and does much to augment the natural beauty of the surroundings.
