Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary

Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary stretches across the cities of Bhubaneshwar, Cuttack and Khurda. The Chandaka forest was declared a sanctuary by the government in the year 1982. The sanctuary is home to a number of endangered species of plants and animals.

The highland regions of Khurda and Cuttack are covered with the xylia semi evergreen and moist miscellaneous forests which yield Teak, Sal woods and thorny Bamboo shrubs. The forest is reputed for its production of the medicinal eupatorium scrubs and herbs which have healing qualities. Survey of this region reveals that the natural vegetation of Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary comprises of 300 species of plants.

The forest of Chandaka is home to a number of animals and birds. The thick interiors of the forest houses the barking deer, leopards, chitals, common langurs, Indian mongoose, pangolins, mouse deer, sloth bears, rhesus monkeys, ratels, wild pigs, wolves and Hyenas.

The sanctuary is also home to a distinguished collection of reptiles. The Bengal Monitor Lizards, Rock python, Russell viper, Common krait, Kukri snake, Bamboo pit viper, Common vine snake, Chameleon and Indian bronze back inhabit the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Kumarkhunti reservoir in the wildlife sanctuary of Chandaka is popular among the bird watchers who gather to see the red jungle fowl, great horned owl, peafowl, paradise flycatcher, crested serpent eagle, coucal, stone curlew and the black headed oriole.

The tourists may visit the highest point of the sanctuary at Pandari Mundia and the tribal hamlet of Kabaries while on a tour of the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary.
