Dhauligiri

Dhauligiri is located at a short distance of just 7 km from Bhubaneshwar. Dhauligiri bears relics to the rich and unique historical event that changed Emperor Ashoka from a fierce warrior to a peace lover. The Shanti Stupa of Dhauligiri symbolizes the peaceful co-existence of the fellow beings after the ruthless Kalinga war.

Also known as Peace Pagoda, the Shanti Stupa of Dhauligiri is one of the prime Orissa attractions. The Shanti Stupa of Dhauligiri was constructed in the year of 1972 to immortalize the event that had changed the course of history in Orissa.

According to the history of Orissa, Emperor Ashoka was greatly moved by loss of life and property of innocent people in the fierce battle of Kalinga. Emperor Ashoka was so affected by the prevailing condition, that he decided to renounce war as part of his political strategy and instead embraced Buddhism to spread the message of love and harmony. Emperor Ashoka took the historic decision of abandoning war in Dhauligiri besides the Daya River.

Dhauligiri is easily accessible by well maintained roads, well laid railway tracks and air. Most of the tourists prefer to avail the bus service from Bhubaneshwar to travel to Dhauligiri. The closest airport is located at a distance of 12 km in Bhubaneshwar of Orissa.
