Orissa Jagannath Temple

Orissa Jagannath Temple is one of the most well-known temples situated centrally in Puri. It is a holy structure built in the 12th century A.D. Orissa Jagannath Temple has been built magnificently. Its architecture reflects the grandeur and opulence of the rulers of Kalinga. The temple of Jagannath has achieved the heights of greatness due to its excellent architecture. This temple has been designed in a very homogeneous and compressed form. It has been built in an Indo-Aryan style. This temple sees hundreds of devotees every year specially during the festive season that goes on in Orissa. Jagannath temple popularly known as the White Pagoda is 200 feet high. It is situated in a huge complex in Puri.

The temple comprises 4 buildings in a single alignment. There is a bhogmandir, a natmandir, a jaganmohan and a deul. These make up the most of the temple structure. The natmandir and the bhogmandir were built in the 14th and the 15th century. There are around 16 pillars which is one of the most eye-catchnig feature of this temple. The "deul" or the inner enclosed region stands high in a huge courtyard that is almost 440 feet by 350 feet. The deites of Jagannath, his siter Subhadra and his brother Balbhadra rests in the deul of the temple. The entrance is richly decorated and the walls depict the colorful ife of lord Krishna. The entrance gate along with the walls are strewn with paintings of lions and sentinels.

This grand temple has been well-maintained by the administrative body of Orissa. The temple has been enveloped with a thick plaster in order to prevent erosion.
