The influence of the Portuguese in the city has resulted in the use of the English language. The primary mode of communication between the people and the international tourists of Panaji is English. The Portuguese language is popular among a small group of elite individuals.
Derived from Sanskrit, Marathi and Konkani are written in the Devnagari script. The language of Hindi is also derived from Sanskrit and written in the Devnagari script.
