Bodhgaya

Bodhgaya is a world famous Buddhist pilgrimage center. Under a banyan tree in Bodhgaya, Gautam Buddha attained enlightment. During the Mauryan era, under the patronage of King Ashoka, Buddhism flourished and many monastries were built in Bodhgaya.

    The ideal season to visit Bodhgaya is from October to March. Bodhgaya is vey well connected with road, rail and air. The nearest airport is just 7 kms away at Gaya and Patna is 135 kms away. Various airlines like Indian Airlines and Sahara Airlines connect Patna to several important Indian cities like Calcutta, Bombay, Delhi, Ranchi, Lucknow etc. The nearest railway station is located 17kms away at Gaya. Its connection through road is also very extensive. It has very good connections with Gaya (17km), Nalanda (101 km), Rajgir (78 km), Patna (135km), Varanasi (252 km), Calcutta (495km) and many other cities through road. The various means of local transport facilities are taxis, tongas, auto rickshaws, cycle, and rickshaws.

    To encourage tourism in Bodhgaya, Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation has established three hotels - Siddhartha Vihar, Buddha Vihar and Sujata Vihar. These hotels furnish AC Rooms, Non-AC Rooms, and Dormitory Beds to tourists. Apart from these hotels run by the Government there are othetr hotels like Hotel Bodhgaya Ashok managed by Indian Tourism development Corporation and there are various private hotels in Bodhgaya.
