Some of the important districts of the state are:
- Gurdaspur- Located in the north of Punjab, the district of Gurdaspur with Gurdaspur as its administrative headquarter is a well known for its agricultural and the traditional handloom industry
- Amritsar- Situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from the borders of Pakistan, the Diatrict of Amritsar is an important cultural, industrial and economic center of the state
- Kapurthala-It is the smallest district of Punjab with the district headquarter in Kapurthala. Agriculture is the backbone of Kapurthala with wheat, rice, potato, sugarcane, and maize as the main crops of the region.
- Jalandhar- Situated on the fertile plains of the rivers Beas and Sutlej, Jalandhar district is famous for the sports goods, wooden products, leather goods and textiles.
- Nawanshehar- The district lies on the eastern side of Punjab. The district is economically very sound with most of the people settled abroad.
- Hoshiarpur- The district of Hoshiarpur is situated on the north eastern side of Punjab. Being the oldest district of the state, Hoshiarpur has a strong educational base with many reputed schools and universities.
- Rupnagar- The district of Rupnagar has a rich cultural history with its district headquarter in Rupnagar city.
- Ludhiana- The district of Ludhiana with its district headquarters in Ludhiana, houses many important industries of Bicycle parts and Hosiery goods.
- Firozpur- geographically adjacent to Pakistan, the Firozpur district is the biggest district of the state and houses most of the rice mills of the region.
- Faridkot- The district of Faridkot is situated in the south western part of the state. The economy of the district depends on agriculture and agricultural related industries.
- Muktsar- The Muktsar district comes under the cotton growing regions of the state. Situated on the south west of Punjab, the district also grows paddy, wheat, sugarcane, and pulses.
- Moga- Spread over an area of 2230 kilometer, the Moga district has many important religious and historical places.
- Bathinda- The district of Bathinda lies to the south of Punjab with a long historical and cultural tradition.
- Mansa- The district of Mansa is popularly called the “Area of White Gold” as it is the major cotton growing belt of Punjab.
- Sangrur- The district of Sangrur with its administrative headquarters in the Sangrur city boasts of many important historical events.
- Patiala- The district of Patiala is the fifth largest district of the state with a perfect balance between agriculture and industrial growth.
- Fatehgarh Sahib- The district of Fatehgarh Sahib has been a witness to several important historical and religious events.
