Punjab Forestry and Wildlife

Forestry and wildlife forms a major component of the natural resources of a region. Punjab shares a substantial portion of the forestry and wildlife of India.

The Punjab forestry and wildlife is mainly restricted to the following vegetation types which are characteristic to this plain:

  • Coniferous Forests
  • Scrub Forests
  • Range Lands
  • Irrigated Plantations
  • Riverine Forests
  • Canal Side Plantations
  • Roadside Plantations
  • Rail side Plantations
  • Miscellaneous Linear Plantations

    The forestry and wildlife of a region serves as an index of its biodiversity. The wildlife in Punjab is centered around the following hot spots:

  • Hari-ke-pattan, Amritsar, National Wetland and Wildlife Sanctuary: This constitutes one of India's most important lakes. During winters (November-onwards) the place becomes a refuge to around 350 species of migratory birds coming from as far as Siberia.

  • Kanjli Wetland, Kapurtala: Maharaja of Kapurthala had constructed a lake after building a barrage on river Kali Bein. To the left of the lake you will find a lush green forest with diverse wildlife. The lake is an amazing refuge to the migratory birds in winter. All the infrastructural facilities have been developed here to make it a picnic spot. The tourist have even the option for boating in this lake.

  • Satluj Water Body Wetland, Ropar: Here you can witness more than 250 species of migratory birds. The picturesque ambiance with a stretch of 30 kilometers of crystal clear water has made it a popular spot for:
    • angling
    • kayaking
    • canoeing
    • boating
    • long distance swimming
  • Zoological Park, Chhatbir: This is a wildlife park having an area of around 200 acres of land and lies at a distance of 20 kilometers from Chandigarh and 55 kilometers from Patiala. It is the home of 52 species of animal as well as of 62 species of birds. The animals and birds are tried to keep in an atmosphere similar to their natural habitat. It is known for its Lion Safari.
