Gurudwara Thumb Sahib, Maghi

Gurudwara Thumb Sahib, Maghi is associated with Guru Nanak, a renowned Sikh prophet and philosopher. He stressed on the importance of nuptial bonds as he believed that without leading a family life, it is difficult to abstain from the worldly pleasures. No religion was greater than humanity to him.

To Guru Nanak, all the religions are the same and one must follow one's own religion with utmost devotion. Therefore, the Muslims took him as a peer and the Hindus accepted him like a guru. Gurudwara Thumb Sahib, Maghi in Kartarpur was raised to commemorate the Guru.

A conflict arose regarding the dead body of Guru Nanak after his demise. The Hindus proposed to cremate it while the Muslims wanted to bury it. Hence, there is a Muslim grave at Kartarpur as well as a Hindu tomb for Guru Nanak on either side of river Ravi.

After partition of India and Pakistan, the tomb went to Pakistan and the grave fell within India. Apart from Gurudwara Thumb Sahib, Maghi, this is the other site of religious importance in Kartarpur.
