The Catholic Mission of the Indian Punjab's status rose after the Partition in 1955. They established their headquarter in Jalandhar as they gained power as the Apostolic Prefecture. From then onwards, Catholic Cathedral, Jalandhar Cantt became the mother church of Punjab. Initially, Catholic Cathedral was looked after by various chaplains. These chaplains were appointed to Jalandhar by the Diocese of Lahore.
The old church was built by Rev. Fr. John Macodnnel. He dedicated the church to St. Patrick. In the later years, a new church was built in the same location. The old church building was brought down from February 1987. His Holiness Pope John Paul II blessed the foundation stone of the new church in February 1986 and the stone was laid in April 1987 by His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Symbhorian Keeprath Bishop of Jalandhar Diocese.
The new church of Catholic Cathedral, Jalandhar Cantt also received the blessings of His grace Archbishop Jose Sanchez. He was the special delegate of Pope John Paul II from Rome. The church was inaugurated in 1989 by His Grace Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan, the Vatican Ambassador and the Apostolic sent to India. The inauguration was celebrated on Diwali, the festival of light in 1989. The Bishops and Arch Bishops from various regions of India were present to attended the auspicious occasion of inauguration of the Catholic Cathedral.
Catholic Cathedral, Jalandhar Cantt the famous Church in Punjab has been designed in a way that it is a reflective of the secular nature of India. This church is one of its kind in the East, as it received the blessings from the Pope in Rome.
