The Sargarhi Memorial at Ferozepur, is an important Gurudwara of Punjab. It has been built in the memory of the famous soldiers who lost their lives in the battle of 1897. This battle took place in the Samana Ridge of Sulleiman and Hindu Kush Range. 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh regiment had died fighting the local tribal chiefs during this war.
Every year on the 12th day of September many people gather in the The Sargarhi Memorial at Ferozepur to pay their homage to these martyrs.
The history of this battle forms the part of the 8 narratives on collective bravery that is published by the UNESCO. It is also taught in many French schools.
It was in the early morning on the day the battle was fought that 1000 Pathans surrounded the post of Sargarhi and tried to get in. This post was held by one of the platoons under Havildar Ishwar Singh. All the Jat Sikh Jawans who were fighting the battle died. 600 dead bodies of the enemy was also found in the battle ground. All of the 21 soldiers were awarded an IOM, the highest award that a non British fighter could achieve.
Apart from The Sargarhi Memorial at Ferozepur you can also visit many other sites of historical and religious importance in this city. The monument built in the memory of the great martyrs Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru is the most well known among them.
