Oriya is the official language of Puri. Approximately 80 % of the citizens of the town of Puri converse in Oriya. Oriya has evolved from the Indo-Aryan group of languages, around the 10th century and has a script of its own. It is also one of the officially recognized languages in India.
Besides Oriya, a small percentage of people of Puri speak Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Telugu. Bengali is spoken mostly in the Mayurbhanj region. English is also spoken by a significant number of people in Puri and is widely understood. English is also used for official purposes in Puri.
