Shimla Theater and Movies

Shimla theater and movies are all centered around the Gaiety Theater that is located in the Mall of Shimla. This theater has been a major source of entertainment for the people of Shimla over a long time. This theater of Shimla is considered to be one of the oldest theaters in the world.

This age old theater of Shimla has been constructed in a purely Neo-Gothic style of architecture. The Gaiety theater has become a major heritage site of the town of Shimla. The hall echoes vibrantly even if you whisper something very softly.

This theater of Shimla has been designed by the noted architect Henry Irwin. This traditional theater was inaugurated on 30th of May in the year 1887. Since then, a number of well known plays have been performed on the stage of the Gaiety theater of Shimla. This theater was originally built to work as a source of entertainment for the British people. The cultural need led to the opening up of this theater during that time. The best plays that were performed in London, were re-performed at the Gaiety theater.

The well known theatrical personalities who have contributed to the stage of the theater of Shimla are Field Marshal Lord Roberts (president of the Club from 1891 to 1892), Major PH Dnyer (noted producer and actor), Lord Bill Beresford, Rudyard Kipling (poet and author), Lord Kitchner, Mrs. Deane, Major General Sir Godfrey Williams, Colonel Baden-Powell, Sir Dennis Fitz Patrick and many more.
