What is a District Council?
A District Council is a part of the executive and judicial governments in some jurisdictions, which are formed by the Central Government of the country. The north eastern states of the nation are mostly characterized by these kinds of councils, which are based on a special provision mentioned in the Constitution of India. In the country of India, these District Councils are mainly formed to maintain and restore the original customs and lifestyles of the native tribal population.
Is there any special name for the District Councils of north eastern India?
The district councils of the states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim and Tripura located in the north eastern side of the country are known as the Autonomous District Councils (A. D. C.). They are called so owing to the fact that the Union Government of India has given varied autonomous degrees within the legislature of the state to these regions of the nation. Most of these councils function on the basis of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Such a kind of Council is regarded as the North Eastern Council (N. E. C.), which comprises of the states of Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland and Tripura. A District Consumer Protection Council is even a kind of District Council.
Reason behind formation of District Council in Sikkim
The state of Sikkim being a tribal state, the District Council of Sikkim was formed to address the long standing requirement of the residents of the state to protect the traditions and customs of the age old tribal communities. They claimed for the protection of their social codes as it has always been maintained.

- Constitutes several other non-official and official members, who represent the same interests prescribed by the Government of the state
- Distributed among the Zilla Parishads that are located at the four different districts of the state
- Formulates and forwards plans for balanced and secured development of the state
- Timely reviews the implementation of the suggested proposals
- Reviews the expenditure of the state
- Reviews the maintenance of public order and security of Sikkim.
