Sikkim Legislature

Sikkim legislature is a unicameral body. Just like the legislature structure of India, Sikkim legislature comprises of a legislative assembly with the speaker responsible for conducting the proceedings of the house. The governor is appointed by the center and is the representative of the president in the state. Legislature of Sikkim operates for a term of five years, like everywhere else in India. However, there can be special occasions when the legislature can be dissolved.

Governor and the Speaker

The governor is the head of the state legislature at Sikkim. Although the post is largely ceremonial in profile, yet there can be times when he has to take important decisions regarding the operations of the state legislature. Sri V. Rama Rao is the present governor of Sikkim. The speaker is the second most significant person in the legislature in Sikkim. He is vested with the responsibility to conduct the proceedings of the legislative assembly and guide the debates and discussions initiated by the members of the Legislative Assembly towards a fruitful end. Sri Dawa Norbu Takarpa is the speaker of Sikkim legislature and he is assisted by deputy speaker Sri Mingma Tshering Sherpa.

Leader of the House and the Secretary

The chief minister of the state usually does the role of the leader of the house. He represents the ruling party or the ruling coalition, whichever the case may be. He guides the members from his party and also the members from the opposition towards a fruitful completion of the issues brought up in the house. Sri Pawan Chamling is the present Leader of the House in the Sikkim legislature. He is assisted in his legislative duties by Sri Ran Bahadur Subba, the minister of Parliamentary affairs. The secretary Sri TK Chankpa, is an important part of the legislature in Sikkim.
