Sikkim is the most frequented tourist spot in the north eastern part of India. Earlier, the place was not accessible for far flung tourists, say from west or southern half of the country. It was visited mainly by the tourists from neighboring states. But the scenario has changed drastically for the last couple of decades. The State Government as well as the Central Government unitedly took productive initiatives to take more people to Sikkim. For budget conscious tourists, the railway department now runs a number of trains to New Jalpaiguri, the nearest railway station to Sikkim. Sikkim railway booking has been made more updated and user friendly.
Sikkim railway booking can now be done from any where, unlike in the dreary past days when standing in the long queue in front of the railway counters was the only way of getting hold of the tickets. The Government has modernized the infrastructure and now telephonic booking is possible. There are two helplines for booking railway tickets to Sikkim, one is in the SNT Bus Stop Complex and the other in Railway Enquiry in New Jalpaiguri station. The numbers are:
