Sikkim Society

The Sikkim society is a curious blend of the people and culture residing in the territory of Sikkim. The society of Sikkim shows a distinct pattern with the presence of a number of communities in Sikkim: the society in Sikkim is, in fact, an extension of the communal harmony prevalent within the territory.

To begin with, it can be said that the Sikkim society is composed of a number of people belonging to different communities and races. Among the important communities residing in Sikkim are:

  • Bhutias - The Bhutias are said to have migrated in Sikkim during the fifteenth century. In Sikkim, the Bhutia people are the people who belong to the Tibetan origin: thus, the language spoken by them contain the elements of the Tibetan language. The Bhutias in the northern part of Sikkim are known as Lachungpas and Lachenpas.

  • Nepalese - The Nepalese form the majority of the society at Sikkim. The Nepalese are simple people, who dwell throughout the length and breadth of Sikkim. In Sikkim, the Nepalese are known to be good farmers and businessmen: it is the Nepalese who are accredited with introducing terrace farming in Sikkim.

  • Lepchas - The Lepchas are said to be the autonomous tribe of Sikkim. Lepchas, who are known as Rongpas in Sikkim, are said to be the original inhabitants of Sikkim. In Sikkim, the Lepchas occupy the Dzongo region situated in northern part of the territory.

Besides, the society at Sikkim seems to be incomplete without a reference to the fairs and festivals of the territory. An estimate of the fairs and festivals of Sikkim is as follows:
    • Losar
    • Saga Dawa
    • Viswa Karma Puja
    • Holi
    • Sakewa

    • Kayged Dance
    • Tamu Lochar
    • Namsoong
    • Maghe Sakranti
    • Nyempa Guzom
    • Bhanu Jayanti, etc.
Furthermore, the society of Sikkim also contains a host of dance forms that form an indelible part of the folk culture of Sikkim. Some of the folk dances of Sikkim are:
    • Tamang Selo

    • Dau Ra Jane
    • Sebru Naach
    • Dhaan Naach

Thus, it is rightly said that the society in Sikkim is an exemplar of unity in diversity.
