Guning Sorathi
Guning Sorathi is a very well known folk dance performed in Sikkim by their local tribes. This dance in Sikkim is performed only by the Gurungs, one of the oldest tribe in the region. The dance depicts the grief and misery of the poor and is performed in all social events in Sikkim.
Guning Sorathi of Sikkim is performed mainly by the women who portray the grief of the society. There is a very interesting story attached to the birth of the Guning Sorathi in Sikkim. It is believed that in ancient times, there was a Gurung King who had 1600 queens but none of them could give him an heir. The king was very disheartened because of this and founded pleasure in earthly pleasures for which he forcefully took away all the precious jeweleries of his queens.
Due to this behavior of the king, the queens remained in grief. Guning Sorathi at Sikkim describes the grief of these queens. The dance uses such poignant expressions, that you can also feel the pain of the queens that makes tears come out of the eyes.
