Gurang

The individuals belonging to the Gurang tribe are perhaps the most hard-working and down to earth people residing in Sikkim. The primary reason that lies behind the birth of this belief is the fact that they invest a sumptuous fraction of their time in cultivation, tilling the ground, sowing crops and various other miscellaneous tasks that can be linked with agriculture.

The members of the tribe named as Gurang in the state of Sikkim are speculated to share a common line of descent with that of the robust Mongolians. The main reason that led to this conclusion is the fact that their facial features are strikingly similar and their life-style also reminds of the glorious Mongolians.

The people who are included in the Gurang tribe in Sikkim practice Hinduism with respect and devotion. But the entire scenario was totally different a few decades ago as the Llamas were bestowed with all the responsibilities for executing all types of religious sermons ahead of the Brahmins which was indeed very queer.

But with the advancement of time, the Gurang of Sikkim also include the Brahmins in their religious ceremonies. The Gurang within Sikkim are also bifurcated into two divisions which are the Char jat and the Sora Jat. There was a hint of controversy regarding this division but with the arrival of modern times this demarcation was later dissolved in order to avoid any sort of problems between the people.

But as far as marriages are concerned, inter group weddings are also very common. The lingo that is confined only to the individuals of the Gurang across Sikkim is known as Gurung Kura.
