Lord Krishna's birthday or Janmastami in Sikkim is revered by its denizens in the auspicious month of Thawan which incidentally falls during the stretch of the months of July and August in accordance with the Indian calender. This propitious festival is also affectionately regarded as Gokulastami or Krishnamtami by the hospitable and polite citizens of the state of Sikkim.
The term Janmastami in Sikkim was coined with reference to the day of the month of Thawan during which it is celebrated. The eighth day of the lunar month proudly hosts this magnanimous event. This popular event is feted for a period of two whole days. As a matter of fact, in order to precisely demarcate the first day from second day, they are dowered with separate names. That is the maiden day of the event is regarded as Krishnastami or Gokulastami whereas the second day is referred to as Kalastami or Janmastami.
The town of Mathura served to be the birth destination of Lord Krishna and is considered to be one of the most revered and sacred venues for the ethnic Hindus residing not only in India but all over the globe.
Janmastami of Sikkim is characterized by joyous events like the bhajans, kirtans, raaslerelas and other related recreational activities. Apart from the merry aspect, Janmastami across Sikkim also has a deep and meaningful religious wing also.
On some occasions, Janmastami within Sikkim merges with the day of Sharvan Poornima. The frequent showers of rain and the chilled breeze truly rejuvenates the mind and the soul.
