Losoong

The Losoong is one of the most well known festivals in the state of Sikkim. It is celebrated by the people belonging to the religion of Buddhism in Sikkim. The festival of Losoong in Sikkim is an age-old festival celebrated by the Lepchas and the Bhutias.

According to the calender of Tibet, the festival of Losoong starts from the tenth month, which generally falls sometime around the month of December.

The festival of Losoong at Sikkim is a very joyous festival, which is celebrated by performing the Cham dance form. In the Cham dance form, the people of Sikkim dress up as divine beings and enact their roles, taking up subjects from the myths popular in the state of Sikkim. The people of Sikkim wear bright dresses to give vent to the festive mood of the post-harvest period.

Other than the Cham dance, an integral part of the festival of Losoong of Sikkim is the Chaang, a variety of locally produced wine. The people of the state have this wine and get into the celebratory mood of the festival.

The festival of Losoong of Sikkim, like the Losar festival, is held to usher in the new year for the state of Sikkim. The time of the year when this festival is held is post to the season of harvest in the state. This festival is also held to wish for a good harvest in the coming year.
