Maruni Dance, Sikkim



The north eastern state of Sikkim is culturally well developed and possesses some extensive traditional heritage of music and culture. Maruni is one of the most popular dance form of Sikkim which is patronized by the tribals and holds considerable significance in this land.

Song, music and dances are the part and parcel of human life and the music performed by many communities of Sikkim in several yearly and casual occasions, form some popular moods of entertainment for this state.

Maruni of Sikkim is a very delightful dance form which essentially reflects the Nepali dance form. This popular dance is mainly performed during Diwali or during Tihar festival. The Tihar festival is celebrated with the motive to mark the returning of Rama from his vanvas (exile). Maruni is performed on this occasion with great vigor and excitement.

Even the popular Maruni dance is also performed on some casual occasions like marriage and other rituals. Maruni dance has some specified colorful costumes which the performers wear during their performances. During Tihar Festival, the Maruni dancers visit door to door wearing their costumes teaming with radiant ornaments. To wear a nose ring is mandatory for the dancers. Dhatu Waray, a peculiarly dressed clown follows the performers during this period. The rhythm of the Maruni dance in Sikkim is fabulous and has a transparent classic style. The Maruni dance is often performed along with naumati baja which is a nine instrument orchestra. Along with the performers, the people of Sikkim also largely enjoy this popular dance form of this state. Maruni is one of the ancient dance forms of Nepal.
