Sikkim Mask dance is a very popular dance form in the north eastern region. More specifically, the mask dance of Sikkim is very famous. People from all across the world enjoy watching the mask dance at Sikkim. Mask dance are not performed on all occasions. They are performed on special occasions.
The four very famous mask dance of Sikkim are listed below :
Rumtek Chaam : This mask dance in Sikkim is performed on a sacred event. The dance describes the eight demonstrations of Guru Rimpoche. The dance is performed on the tenth day of the fifth month of the Tibetan calendar which coincides with the month of June as per English calendar. The event is celebrated with large bash and is visited by lots of pilgrims and tourists.
Kagyed Dance : This mask dance at Sikkim is performed on various themes ranging from Buddhist mythology to the burning of effigies made of wood, flour and paper. The dance is performed by the monks and are accompanied by music and hymns. This mask dance is performed on the 28th and 29th day of the tenth month as per Tibetan calendar which coincides with December in the English calendar. The dance describes the demolition of the vicious spirits and spread of peace and prosperity all across the state of Sikkim.
Enchey Chaam : This mask dance is performed by the lamas in the courtyard of the Gompa to observe various religious festivals. The beautifully decorated monks with painted masks on their face, match the correct steps with the accompanying musical beats. The dance is performed on the 18th and 19th of the eleventh month of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar which coincides with December - January.
Gouthor Chaam : This Sikkim mask dance is executed two days before the festival of Losar in the month of February.
