Nepalese

The Nepalese in Sikkim are very distinctly demarcated into quite a few sub-cultures who bear some very notable discrepancies with regards to appearances and the varied groups of customs that are followed by the two sects. The dawn of the Nepalese era has been recorded to be a little after the arrival of the Bhutias in the state of Sikkim. Some of the most important groups of the Nepalese in Sikkim are mentioned below:-
  • Gurung
  • Rai
  • Magar
  • Mewar
  • Tamang
  • Limta
However, there are many more such groups. The primary domains that are vanquished by the Nepalese of Sikkim extends from the eastern to the western brink. It is also known that the Nepalese across Sikkim have also spread themselves to the venues that are located in the northern part of the state. The chief religions that are followed by them are Hinduism and Buddhism.

Most of the individuals who belong to the Nepalese tribe in Sikkim earn their livelihood through the business transactions that are carried out in the markets of Gangtok. As a matter of fact, there are many castes of tradesman who are considered to be of the lower caste. Some of them are Kami, Sarki and Damai. Most of them have opted to work as a silversmith.

The Nepalese have been always ahead of all the other tribes like the Bhutias and the Lepchas in virtually every aspect. For example the Nepalese have been cultivating maize as the climate prevailing there is perfectly suited for its growth. Again they have been able to devour majority of the Government jobs owing to the fact that they have been educated in schools. But the Bhutias and the Lepchas have always persisted with the training obtained from the monasteries.
