Tibetan Dance



Tibetan dance form is widely popular along the north eastern region of India. The dance form is inspired by the Tibetan culture as the country is very near to Sikkim. Most of these Tibetan dance forms are performed on every auspicious and happy occasion.

Most of the Tibetan dance at Sikkim are performed to praise the nature, describe any ritual or custom, describe any occasion or function, etc. Most of their dances are based on some natural themes. Two types of Tibetan dance in Sikkim which are very famous are Yak Chaam and Singhi Chaam.

Yak Chaam is a form of Tibetan dance of Sikkim. This dance form is dedicated to the most beneficial animal used in the high altitudes known as yak. The dance form describes the life of a yak and the herdsmen who live in the mountains.

Another Tibetan dance performed in Sikkim is Singhi Chaam. This dance form is also known as Snow Lion Dance. The dance form enacts the five peaks of Mount Kangchendzonga, which is considered sacred by the locals of the region and together they resemble the snow lion. The peaks are a very significant cultural symbol of Sikkim and hence the dance is considered very important during some religious festivals.
