Sikkim Wood Carving



Sikkim wood carving is very famous not only in the north eastern region but all across the globe. The wood carving in Sikkim is not a new form of craft, rather it is a very ancient craft work of Sikkim. The proof are the walls of the ancient monasteries, museums and other monuments which are adorned with the beautiful wood carvings.

Most of the wood carving in Sikkim are the mode of sign language. Every piece of this craft work tries to symbolize something or the other. Mainly, the wood carvings in Sikkim that decorate the walls of monasteries have very deep meaning. They try to convey some religious messages to the visitors.

Another creative specimen of the local tribes of this north eastern state is the mask that is used in mask dances. Some of the mask dances have masks made out of wood. This is another specimen of the beautiful wood carving of Sikkim. The painted masks carved out of wood are the main attraction of the mask dances. People in cities use this mask to decorate their houses.
