An epitome of Mughal art and architecture, the Taj Mahal is one of the famous landmarks in the world. It is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was Ebba Koch, who was a well known scholar to dedicate himself to study the architectural patterns of this grand monument. Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in fond memory of his loving wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Taj Mahal is serenaded worldwide as a symbol and expression of love. A great amount of skill and craftsmanship has gone into making this an ancient historical wonder. It took almost 20,000 workers to complete the entire structure and a total amount of 32 crore rupees went in for its construction and beautification. Travelers having an interest in culture studies would love to explore and delve about the Islamic pattern and layout that pervade the entire structure. For others, Taj Mahal gives you a peek into the Mughal world of grandeur and glory.
Taj Mahal is elevated on a high red colored sandstone base that is further topped by a vast terrace made of white marble. On this marble the fine dome edged by the four narrowing minarets rests. Inside this dome is the bejeweled cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal. The entire monument has been so beautifully designed, that it is often claimed of being "designed by giants and finished by jewellers". The one and only asymmetrical object that this monument houses is the casket of Shah Jahan that was created next to the queen's.
