Districts of Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is a land of rich culture and traditions and its history is takes us back to several thousand years. The districts of Tamil Nadu are very well administered. It has a vast stretch of coastline, which is nearly 1000 km. For the sake of convenience in administration Tamil Nadu is divided into 30 districts, which are as follows:


Chennai district is on the north-east of Tamil Nadu and located between 12* 9' and 13* 9' of the northern latitude and 80* 12' and 80* 19' of the southern longitude. The district headquarters are at Chennai.


Coimbatore is one of the largest districts of the state of Tamil Nadu, with the geographical area of 7469 Sq. km. The district headquarters are located at Coimbatore.


Cuddalore district is geographically spread over 3,678 Sq. km of Tamil Nadu. Popular tourist places of Cuddalore district are Pichavaram, Vadalur, Srimushnam, Padaleeswarar Temple, Devanatha Swami Temple. The district headquarters are located at Cuddalore.


Dharmapuri district was constituted on 2nd October 1965 and lies between 11º 47’ and 12º 33’North latitude and 77º 02’ and 78º 40’ East longitude. The well-known tourist places of Dharmapuri district are Hogenakal Falls, Shri Theerthagirishwarar Temple at Theerthamalai, Chenraya Perumal Temple at Adhiyamankottam, Subramanya Siva Memorial at Papparapatti. Dharmapuri is the districts headquarter.


Dindigul District is located between 10º 05’and 10º 09’ North Latitude and between 77º 30’ and 78º 20’ East Longitude. The popular tourist destination of are: Thadikombu - Perumal Temple, Begambur Big Mosque, Anjaneyar Temple at Nadupatti etc. The famous hill resorts Kodaikanal and Srimalai are located in the district Dindigul.


Erode district is located on the northern part of Tamil Nadu, between 10º 36” and 1º 58” of the North Latitude and between 76º 49” and 77º 58” of the East Longitude. Erode is the districts headquarter.


Kanchipuram district lies between 11° 00' to 12° 00’ North of latitude and 77° 28' to 78° 50' East of longitude. The district is famous for its silk sarees and temples. Kanchipuram is the districts headquarter.


Kanyakumari district is the southern most district of the state of Tamil Nadu and located between 77° 15' and 77° 36’ of east of longitude and 8° 03’ and 8° 35' north of Latitude. Nagercoil is the headquarter of Kanyakumari District.


Karur District is geographically located between 11.00' and 12.00' North Latitude and between 77.28’ and 78.50' East Longitude and spread over an area of 2,895.57 Sq. km. The district is famous for its handloom industry engaged in the export of bed sheets, towels, napkins, aprons, kitchen towels, bathmats, tea mats, curtains etc. The district headquarters are at Karur.


Krishnagiri District is situated between 11º 12'and 12º 49'North Latitude and between 77º 27'to 78º 38'East Longitude.


Madurai district is located between 9°30'' and 10°30'' North Latitude and between 77°00.00 and 78°30.00 East Latitude. It is very famous for the Sri Meenakshi - Sundareswarar Temple. Madurai


Nagapattinam district lies between 10.10° and 11.20° North latitude and 79.15° and 79.50° East longitude. The district headquarter is located at Nagapattinam.


Namakkal district lies between 11.00’and 11.36’ North Latitude and between 77.28’ and 78.30’ East Longitude. Namakkal is the districts headquarter.


Nilgiris District is located between 76.0° to 77.15° East of Longitude and 10 - 38° WP 11-49° North of Latitude. Udagamandalam is the headquarter of Nilgiris District.


Perambalur district is located between 10.54’ and 11.30’ degree of Northern latitude and 78.40’ and 79.30’ degree of the Eastern longitude. Places to visit are Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Siruvachur Mathura Kaliaman Temple, Chettikulam Thandayuthapani Swami Temple etc. Perambalur is the districts headquarter.


Pudukkottai district is located between 78.25' and 79.15' of the East of Longitude and between 9.50' and 10.40' of the North of Latitude. The district headquarter is located at Pudukkottai.


Ramanathapuram District is located between 9° 05 and 9° 50 North Latitude and between 78° 10 and 79.27° East Longitude.Ramanathapuram is the districts headquarter.


Salem district is located between 11 14`and 2 53` North Latitude and between 77 44` and 78 50`East Longitude and covers the geographical area of 5205 Sq. km. Salem is the districts headquarter.


Sivaganga district is situated between 9.43' and 10.2' North Latitude and between 77º 30’ and 77.47' and 78.49' East Longitude. The district headquarter is located at Sivaganga.


Thanjavur district is located on the east of Tamil Nadu, between 9 º 50’ and 11 º 25’ of the north latitude and 78 º 45’ and 70 º 25’ of the East longitude. Thanjavur is the districts headquarter.


Theni district covers the geographical area of 3067.2 Sq. km, and was formed on 25th July 1996. There are many temples at Theni some of the famous ones are Saneeswaran Temple, Velappar Temple, Bathrakaliamman Temple, Paramasivan Temple, Sivakami Amman Temple. Theni


Thoothukudi district lies on south east of Tamil Nadu state, covering an area of 4621 sq. kms. Few populat places to visit are: Thoothukudi Tiruchendur, Manapad Kalugumalai, Ottapidaram Ettayapuram, Panchalankurichi Nava Thiruppathi, Korkai Athichanallur, Vanchi Maniyachi etc.


Tiruchirappalli lies between 10° and 11° - 30' Northern Latitude and between 77° - 45' and 78° - 50’ Eastern Longitude. Tourists come to Tiruchirappalli district to see Rockfort Temple, Jambukeswara Temple, St. Lourdu's Church, Hazrath Nathervali, Grand Anaicut (Kallanai Dam), etc. Tiruchirappalli


Tirunelveli district covers the geographical area of 6,823 Sq. km of Tamil Nadu state and the economy is chiefly dependant on agriculture. Crops grown in the region are cumbu, ragi, gingelly, pulses, groundnut, coconut, chillies, indigo and cotton. Tirunelveli


Thiruvallur district is geographically located between between 12°15' and 13°15' Northern Latitude and between 79° 15' and 80° 20' Eastern Longitude and spread over 3422 Sq. km.Some of the places to visit are Murugan Temple, Lord Arulmigu Subramaniya Swami Temple, Ammaiyar Mukthi Adaintha etc. Thiruvallur


Tiruvanamalai district is located between 11'55 and 13'15 North Latitude and between 78'20 and 79'50 East Longitude, covering the geographical area of 6191 Sq. km. The people of the district mainly grow rice, millets, cereals, pulses, sugarcane, groundnut, gingely, and cotton. Tiruvanamalai


Tiruvarur district is located between 10º 20' and 11º 07' Latitude (N-S) and between 79 º15' and 79 º 45' Longitude (E-W). Tiruvarur


Vellore district lies between 12-15° and 13-15° North Latitude and between 78-20° and 79-50° East Longitude, covering a total area of 6077 Sq. km. The world-renowned medical institution Christian Medical College is situated here. Vellore


Viluppuram district of Tamil Nadu is located between 11 38' 25" N and 12 20' 44" S: 78 15' 00” W and 79 42' 55" E. The district is spread over an area of 7250 Sq. km. People come here to visit Hanuman Temple Rajagiri Fort, Gingee Fort, Nandieswarar - Thiruvamathur Temple, Esalam Temple, Angala Parameswari – Melmalayanur, Venkataramana Temple etc. Viluppuram


Virudhunagar district is surrounded by Madurai on the north, by Sivaganga on the northeast, by Ramanathapuram on the east and by the districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin on the south. Famous tourists places like Bhuminathaswamy Temple, Ramana Maharishi Ashram, Andal , Vadabadrasayi koi, Pallimadam, Pilavakkal Dam, Ayyanar falls, Mariamman Koil are situated in the district of Virudhunagar. Virudhunagar is the district hreadquarters.
